Prometheus (from Mechwarrior: UNBOUND)
|
This is a totally illegal mech (even by level 3 standards). Its story, Technical readout and record sheet can be found in Mechwarrior: Unbound, a now out-of-production scenario book for 2nd edition Mechwarrior RPG; set on Solaris 7. The rather questionable technical readout goes as follows:
Type: Prometheus
Tonnage: 75 tons
Internal Structure: 3.75 tons
Engine: 375GM
Walking: 5
Running: 8
Heat Sinks: 13 (3 tons)
Gyro: 4 tons
Cockpit: 3tons
Armor Factor: 206 (11.5 tons)
Armor and Internal Structure:
H: 3 6
CT: 23 35/9
RT/LT: 16 25/7
RA/LA: 12 17
RL/LL: 16 28
Weapons and Ammo:
Left Torso: LRM15, SRM6, 3 x Machine Gun. Ammo LRM15 (8), Ammo SRM6 (15)
Right Torso: (same as Left Torso)
Center Torso: (has a torso-mounted cockpit outfitted with DNI technology)

Overview:
This one-of-a-kind 'Mech was created by one of the NAIS research teams assigned to study Clan technology. It will never see mass production or even duplication.
The Prometheus was an attempt to construct a new BattleMech from salvaged Clan material. Unfortunately, the NAIS has failed to unravel all the mysteries of the Clans' modular (pod) technology, so the Prometheus was constructed using Inner Sphere techniques. The result was an ungainly but deadly fusion of the Loki, Madcat, Thor and Vulture that easily defeated all comers.
A year after its creation, Professor Kale "appropriated" the Prometheus for his DNI experiments and installed one of the VRPP control pods in a torso cockpit. He brought the Prometheus to the arenas of the Game World, and the 'Mech has succeded far beyond even the optimistic expectations of its creators.
Capabilities:
In addition to the advantages provided by placing the DNI pod in the 'Mech's torso-mounted cockpit, the Prometheus carries a wide range of unusual weapons salvaged from the front lines of the war with the Clans. These weapons are surprisingly effective, especially in the arena, where Clan technology is largely unknown.
Game Notes:
The Prometheus was tinkered together from parts of other machines, and so does not have the structural integrity of a production model or even a prototype 'Mech. If the pilot of the Prometheus rolls a 2 or 3 when firing a weapon, the weapon is destroyed and may not be used again until it is repaired.
In addtion, the Prometheus is more likely to take critical hits than a production 'Mech. Add +1 to all critical hit rolls. If the result is higher than 12, the entire location is destroyed. Note that locations and equipment destroyed by critical hits are salvageable, but they cease to function until repaired.

Artist's own notes:
The Prometheus is mentioned as being black in the fluff. DNI (Direct Neural Technology) technology allows a pilot to literally plug his brain into the machine with roughly the same results as Clan Enhanced Imaging, only more effective...and more side effects. Users quickly go insane. In the game scenario, player characters have to deal with an enemy using the Prometheus against them in Solaris 7.
